    SHOW ME

When taking your driving test, the examiner will ask you one ‘Show Me’ question.

This is where you show how you would carry out a safety task whilst you are driving.

    TELL ME

When taking your driving test, the examiner will ask you one ‘Tell Me’ question.

This question will be asked from a list of 14 possible questions.

So you must learn them all !

This is where you explain how you would carry out a safety task at the start of your test, before you start driving.

    Closed Accordion
    1. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey...

I would press the brake pedal and make sure the brakes do not feel spongy or slack. I would also test the brakes as I set off and make sure the vehicle does not pull to one side.

    2. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked...

The recommended tyre pressures will be in the manufacturer’s guide. Tyres, including the spare, should be checked and adjusted using a reliable pressure gauge when the tyres are cold, not forgetting to refit the valve caps.

    3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash...

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.

    4. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road...

I would check that there are no cuts and bulges. There should be a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

    5. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle...

I would turn on the ignition if necessary and operate the switch. I would then walk around the vehicle to check.

    6. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system...

A warning light should illuminate on the dashboard if there is a fault with the ABS.

    7. Tell me how you would check the direction indicators are working...

I would press the Hazard Warning switch and then walk round the vehicle to check.

    8. Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car...

I would press the brake pedal and make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.

    9. Tell me how you would check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey...

I would apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel and keep it like that whilst I start the engine. If the power steering is working I would notice a slight movement on the steering as the system begins to operate.

Or, I could turn the steering wheel just after moving off and this will give me an immediate indication that the power steering is working or not.

    10. Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use them...

I would turn on the ignition and dipped headlights if necessary. Then I would then operate the rear fog light switch and check the warning light is on the dashboard. I would only use rear fog lights when visibility is reduced to less than 100 metres.

    11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on...

I would turn on the ignition or engine if necessary and operate the headlight switch. I would then check the dashboard for the main beam warning light.

    12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil...

    Identify dipstick/oil level indicator.

I would pull out the dipstick and wipe clean. I would insert the dipstick and leave it there for a few seconds. I would then pull out the dipstick and check the oil level against the minimum and maximum markers. I would only do this when the engine is cold.

    13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant...

Identify high and low level markings on the header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap.

I would open the cap and fill to just below the maximum marker. I would only do this when the engine is cold.

    14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid...

    Identify reservoir.

I would check the level against the high and low markings.
